A Brief look at the NYPtkd training camp

On the 21st of December 2009, 25 students from NYPTKD, came to the training ground on the early hours of day looking tired but ready for what is going to come. Like most camp, we started off by allowing the members to unpack their luggages into their respective bunks after which the members were separated into 4 groups.

In the first game, everyone except one in each group will have to blindfold themselves, the one who is not blindfolded will be one leading their groups through a series of obstacles. It is was challenging but fun experience for everyone.

After the first game, the groups were introduced to the Skit performance with the theme Life in NYPTKD, in which every group will have to prepare over the course of the camp and also they will have to perform in front of all the coaches on Tuesday night.

Most of us also prepared for the TOC Poomsae competition, we get to know what pattern we will be performing on the event. Some of the blackbelts train their juniors on their respective patterns, in hoping that they achieve great success.

Sir Brian came to the camp at around 2pm to get us prepared for the NYP open house performance. The males have to prepare an unarmed combat performance, wherelse the females have to prepare an aerobic performance.

After that, Sir pass to us some frisbee to play with and give some tips on playing the game.

Our Seniors, then decide to teach us an interesting kicking exercise which involves coordinating
with each other as a team and kick a row of targets in one synchronized movement. Everyone tried tirelessly and finally we manage to get it done nicely.

We played Captain's Ball after that, everyone had great fun playing this game, it's kind of sad that we lose track of the score in the end.

Dinner was served around 7pm, after which everyone return to their groups for their skit preparation while the committee members prepare for the Amazing race.

In the Amazing race, groups will have to find several clues throughout several locations in the school, along the way they have to do tasks such as eating weird things, digging things in a container filled with flour or stacking cups with great coordination. Although there were some problems during the race, everyone enjoy it in the end, especially when it comes to looking their faces cover in flour :D.

Everyone prepared for Lights out.

End of Day 1.

Everyone work up early on Day 2, to prepare for the morning physical training exercise. One of our camper, Jeffrey took charge on the physical training exercise. Everyone ran for about 20min around the school track and the school itself. Along the run, we have to do exercises such as push ups, leg raises and stair climbing. It was a tough start for the day but nevertheless it did not bring anyone down :D.

We had breakfast after the morning PT, after that Sir Brian came to train us again as we make further preparations for the NYP open house.

After lunch, Sir taught us several techniques that could be helpful in a sparring match, he also emphasize the point on having the fun of faking your opponent.
After the training session, we being our sparring matches. Although every match was brutal and tiring, everyone that participated in the matches had gain a match of experience.

Everyone get ready to make final preparations for their skit performance, before all our NYP coaches came to the training ground.

At around 8pm, all groups including the committee members perform their skits in front of the coaches. It was an interesting experience to both parties, and we get to see some extremely funny performances !!! Go Hanzi!!! Sir praise us on our skits and stated that its nice to see us perform on the interesting points on our life in NYPTKD.

After dinner, everyone were brought into a room to recieve several camp awards such as "Best Male Camper","Best Female Camper","Best Attitude Camper" and finally" Best Group". After the distribution of the awards, everyone watch a screening of a montage done by the committee members which includes short video footages of the Senior members and committee members saying some impromptu messages regarding their club. It was a touching moment, and after that each of the coaches gave their short speeches before they make their leave.

There was a movie screening before the night trail, everyone watched the movie "Spin Kick". It is a Korean film which centers on a group of gangsters taking up Taekwondo.

Then comes the commencement of the Night trail, everyone listened to Ghost stories and finally one by one they have to walk through a series of clues place around the campus. Along the way, some of us try to scare the participants. It was an interesting experience for some them to walk alone around the campus so late at night.

End of Day 2.

On Day 3, we played several games before giving a surprise celebration to one of our club members, Rayner :). We played a caterpillar like catching game, in which catchers tries to extend the line like a caterpillar as they continue to catch the rest of them at the ends of the line. We also played the Island game as well.

Then comes the surprise celebration of Rayner's birthday. We trick him by blindfolding him and leading him to the birthday cake. Everyone had a great time playing with the cake haha.

After that, comes a debriefing session followed by a feedback session in which everyone spoke about the good points and bad points of the camp. The committee members and the campers had a good session as we learn about several ways to improve camps we plan in future.

End of NYPTKD training camp 2009, look forward to orientation camp next year!!!
